Frequently Asked Questions

Fee and Payment

What is the cost of an average session?

Our session fees vary based on session type (e.g., individual vs. group), session length, and therapist experience. We’re happy to discuss specific fees for your therapist and modality.

Do you offer a sliding scale?

Yes, we reserve a few spots for sliding scale clients. If this is something you believe you need, please ask us whether we have any of these spots available at this time. We also may be able to offer a waiting list for these spots depending on the current demand and therapist availability.

What is your cancellation and rescheduling policy?

We’re all about flexibility, so you are welcome to reschedule or cancel your appointments whenever you choose – meaning we are not the deciders of when you need to cancel or reschedule. However, please note that we have a strict 48 hour cancellation and reschedule charge policy. This means that if you choose to provide us with at least 48 hours notice for any cancellation or reschedule, you will not be charged. If you choose to not provide at least 48 hours notice, though, you will be charged the full fee of your scheduled session.

Why do you have such a strict cancellation and rescheduling policy?

For many reasons. Foremost is that we’re all about respect: for your time and commitment, your therapist’s time and commitment, and the time of those on our waiting list. And, due to the nature of our therapeutic approach, we strongly believe in following through on valued commitments. When clients schedule a session, they are committing to showing up and engaging in their therapeutic process during that time, just as our therapists are committing to showing up and supporting that journey at that time as well. We also attempt to minimize situations where someone has to decide what is a “good” or “bad” reason to cancel a session without fair notice.

What forms of payment do you accept?

We require every client to have a card on file for their account. However, if you’d rather use cash, check, or even switch your current card on file, please let your therapist know, or contact our center.

When is payment due?

Payments are processed the day of service.

Insurance

Do you take my insurance?

We are an out-of-network provider, meaning we do not accept any insurance payments. You would be expected to pay fees in full at the time of service. However, you are encouraged to check with your insurance company to determine whether they will reimburse you for any portion of your therapy fees prior to initiating therapy. Please also note that some insurance providers have different policies for licensed and pre-licensed therapists. In case your insurance asks, all of our pre-licensed therapists are under supervision of a licensed therapist.

Do you submit claims on my behalf?

At this time, we do not submit electronic claims for clients. However, you will be provided with monthly Superbills in order to have the proper documentation to submit to your insurance provider.

Do you provide monthly Superbills?

Yes! And feel free to let us know if you need this more frequently than monthly.

Scheduling

Will I be able to keep the same appointment day and time as I scheduled for my intake?

Unless you have already received confirmation from our staff that you are set up with a recurring appointment time, please do not assume you will be able to keep that same time continuously.

How does scheduling work?

You will either conduct scheduling directly with your therapist. Or you will be scheduled by an office administrator. Either way, you’re given the time(s) the center or a specific therapist currently has available. If you wish to change any piece of scheduling, please contact your therapist directly or contact our office.

How do I cancel my appointment (without being charged)?

To not be charged, directly contact your therapist and/or our office by phone, email, or client portal messaging with at least 48 hours notice. You are also welcome to tell your therapist of future cancellation needs during a session. We will not accept cancellations done via text messaging or by website contact pages.

When will I get charged for changing or canceling my appointment?

You will be charged for canceling or rescheduling an appointment any time 48 hours notice is not provided.

The Therapy Process

How long does therapy take?

While all good things take time, it’s tricky to know exactly how long your therapeutic journal will take. At the same time, therapy often takes as long as the client believes it will take. If you are interested in meeting your therapeutic goals within a certain timeframe, please discuss that with your therapist so you can collaboratively determine what’s workable.

What type of therapy do you offer?

We focus on the following. However, if you are simply looking for a supportive and neutral environment to explore certain experiences or patterns, we can do that too. Ultimately, the therapeutic process is most effective when the therapist and client work in partnership to meet the client’s needs and work toward specific goals.

  • ACT – Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
  • CBT – Cognitive Behavior Therapy
  • ERP – Exposure with Response Prevention
  • CBIT – Comprehensive Behavioral Intervention for Tics
  • DBT – Dialectical Behavior Skills Training
What can I expect during the intake process / first session?

You will be asked to complete intake documents at least 24 hours prior to your first scheduled session, which include consenting to our polices and answering some initial questions. During your first session, your therapist will ask you many assessment questions and give you space to ask any questions of your own. This is the time of getting to know one another in the therapeutic process, defining the struggles, and clarifying the goals.

How long are typical therapy sessions?

Our typical therapy sessions are 45 minutes. However, sessions can be as short as 30 minutes, or as long as 3 hours, depending on your needs and wants. Usually, sessions are increased to 60, 75, or 90 minute sessions. Two to three hour long sessions are reserved for folks looking for more intensive therapy, and these spots are subject to availability.

How frequently are sessions scheduled?

Sessions are typically scheduled for once weekly. However, you are in-charge of your needs. If you’d like something more or less frequent, discuss this with your therapist. Depending on availability and fit, we will do our best to accommodate.

In-Person vs. Virtual

Do you offer virtual sessions?

Yes! Though please note that virtual sessions are not suitable for everyone.

Do you offer in-person sessions?

Yes! Each therapist has different days where they see clients in person, so please coordinate with your therapist on their availability for in-person sessions.

What if I want to start with virtual sessions and then move to in-person sessions? Or vice versa?

We will try to accommodate this to the best of our ability. However, we cannot guarantee this, as sometimes logistical or therapeutic reasons may get in the way. If that’s the case, your therapist will discuss these concerns with you.

How are virtual sessions conducted?

Sessions are conducted virtually via HIPAA compliant, video conferencing. In some cases, sessions may be conducted via phone, yet the therapist will make the determination of whether that is suitable for your case.

Associate vs. Licensed Therapist

What is the difference between a Licensed Therapy and an Associate Therapist?

*Please note that when we say ‘therapist’ at our clinic, we are referring to the types of therapy credentials that our therapists hold.*
A licensed therapist is someone who has met all the requirements to hold their title that have been set by the state and that title’s governing board. In California, that means we earn a graduate degree, complete a minimum of 300 hours of clinical practice with the supervision of a licensed therapist, and then pass 2 exams before being able to earn our licenses. We are also required to complete a set number of continuing education units every two years to renew our licenses with the Board of Behavioral Sciences.
An Associate Therapist is someone who has completed their graduate degree and is in the process of completing their 300 hours of clinical practice with the supervision of a licensed therapist. All Associate Therapists at our clinic review their cases with one of our licensed therapists each week, and are registered with the Board of Behavioral Sciences.

Should I be concerned that an Associate Therapist needs supervision?

No at all! It’s a great thing that they have supervision! First, it’s required by California law and our licensing board to ensure they’re learning and practicing properly. Second, any client working with an Associate not only gets the skills and knowledge of their therapist, but also the skills and knowledge of their clinical supervisor!

California Limitations

Why do I have to be in California to receive services at your center? Why can’t I just do a virtual session from anywhere?

Therapists get licensed within a given state and are then bound by that state’s rules and regulations. Currently, most states have determined that where the client is at the time of therapeutic service matters. This means, our clients have to be within California borders during the time of service at our center.

What happens when I go on vacation to another state or country? Can I still meet with my therapist virtually during that time?

Depending on where you’re traveling, and for how long, your therapist may or may not be able to meet with you virtually while you travel. This is based on the laws and regulations of the area(s) you are traveling. Please check with your therapist about specifics for your case.

Can I do virtual sessions at this center from somewhere else in California that isn’t driving distance to your center?

Yes! As long as you are in California, we are able to meet with you virtually. Please be ready to provide the address of where you are located during the session time. And please note that virtual sessions are not suitable for everyone.
